Does Cashmere Shrink? What Causes It and How to Prevent It

Does cashmere shrink? Yes, it can, particularly when washing combines unsuitable heat with too much movement. However, shrinkage is not an unavoidable part of owning cashmere. The care label, the wash method and what happens while the knit is wet all matter.

The useful distinction is between a garment that has settled or changed shape and one whose fibres have felted together. They can both look smaller, but they do not have the same prospects for recovery.

Quick answer: Cashmere can shrink if it is washed or dried incorrectly. Follow the garment’s label, use a suitable detergent and handle wet knitwear gently. Mild changes in shape may respond to careful reshaping; a dense, severely felted garment cannot reliably be returned to its original size.

Why Does Cashmere Shrink?

A knitted jumper is a structure of yarn loops, not a solid sheet. Those loops can move during washing. At the same time, animal fibres have a scaled surface. Under unsuitable wet processing and agitation, fibres can become entangled and the fabric can compact.

That is why the washing-machine temperature is only one part of the story. A cool cycle that tumbles a delicate garment too vigorously is not automatically suitable. Equally, hand washing can be rough if it involves scrubbing, twisting or repeated pulling.

Three changes that are easy to confuse

Settling

The knit becomes a little different in size after washing, without an obvious change to its surface. Check the dry measurements before deciding how much it has changed.

Distortion

One part becomes longer, narrower or uneven. A damp sleeve pulled from the basin or a jumper hung to dry may change shape without shrinking evenly.

Felting

The fabric becomes smaller, denser and less flexible. Individual stitches may be harder to see. Severe felting is permanent damage, not simply a tight fit.

A jumper that has grown rather than become smaller needs a different assessment. Our guide to cashmere stretching and keeping its shape explains that side of the problem.

Read the Care Label Before Choosing a Wash

Start with the instructions sewn into the actual piece. A machine-washable garment and one marked hand wash should not be given the same treatment just because both contain cashmere. Decorative trims, construction and fibre blends can change what is suitable.

If machine washing is permitted, use the specified programme and temperature. A button labelled “delicates” does not override a hand-wash-only label. If the label says dry clean only, ask a professional cleaner rather than experimenting with a home soak.

For a washable cashmere knit, the Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute’s care guidance supports cold hand washing with an appropriate detergent, gentle towel pressing and flat drying. Our washing versus dry-cleaning guide helps you decide which route fits your garment.

A Better Routine for Washing Cashmere

  1. Prepare before getting the knit wet. Read the label, choose a wool or cashmere detergent and set out a clean towel and a supported drying space.
  2. Keep the handling calm. When hand washing is allowed, move the garment gently through the water. Avoid rubbing one part against another to attack a mark.
  3. Lift the whole piece. Support the body and sleeves together. Do not pull a water-heavy jumper out by its neckline.
  4. Press rather than wring. Use a towel to take up excess moisture without twisting the fabric into a rope.
  5. Arrange, then leave to dry. Set the knit into its natural outline on a flat support. Keep it away from a radiator or other direct heat, and let it dry completely before assessing the fit.

Choose detergent by its suitability for the fibre, not its scent or promise of stain removal. Woolmark’s detergent guidance is a useful reference when comparing products.

Can You Unshrink Cashmere?

Sometimes a small change in shape can be eased, but “unshrinking” is not a dependable cure. First stop washing it repeatedly. Compare the fully dry garment with earlier measurements or a similar piece, and look closely at the surface.

If the knit is still supple and the change is minor, ask the maker or a knitwear specialist whether gentle damp reshaping is appropriate. Work only within the label’s care limits. Pulling hard at the hem can turn a smaller jumper into a distorted one.

Be wary of guaranteed rescue tricks. Hair conditioner, a hot soak or forceful stretching cannot be promised to reverse felting. A jumper that feels markedly denser and has lost its clear stitch structure deserves a professional assessment before another home treatment.

Does a Cashmere Blend Need Less Care?

Do not assume a blend is shrink-proof. Read the full fibre percentages and the care label. A cashmere-and-lambswool knit still contains animal fibres; a different blend or finish may have different instructions.

Likewise, thickness alone does not settle the question. Our cashmere weight guide explains why a fine layer and a substantial knit behave differently in the wardrobe. Neither should be judged solely by how heavy it feels in your hand.

Ochre’s Cashmere Travel Wrap is knitted in 100% cashmere. Its generous dimensions make it especially useful to prepare the drying space before washing, so the wet ends do not hang unsupported.

Before the Next Wash

  • Photograph the care label while it is easy to read.
  • Record the dry length and chest width without stretching the knit.
  • Choose a wash method that the label actually permits.
  • Have the towel and drying support ready first.
  • Judge any change only after the garment is fully dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cashmere shrink in cold water?

Cold water does not remove every risk. Unsuitable agitation, rough handling or drying can still cause problems. Use the method specified on the garment label, not temperature alone.

Can a cashmere jumper go in a tumble dryer?

Only if its care label explicitly permits tumble drying, and only on the stated setting. Otherwise use a supported flat-drying method. Do not infer permission from another jumper’s label.

How much will cashmere shrink?

There is no useful universal percentage. Fibre treatment, knit construction and the wash and drying conditions affect the result. Comparing the same garment’s measurements before and after washing is more reliable.

Should I buy cashmere a size larger to allow for shrinkage?

No. Buy the intended fit and follow the care instructions. Choosing a larger size assumes a predictable change that may never happen and can leave the neckline, shoulders and sleeves wrong from the start.

Choose the fit you want to wear, then give the knit the care its label asks for.
