Cashmere Knit Gauge & Ply Guide

Cashmere knitwear can vary in weight, warmth, softness and structure. Two of the most important details to understand are gauge and ply.

Gauge refers to the density of the knit. A higher gauge creates a finer, smoother and more lightweight fabric, while a lower gauge creates a chunkier and warmer texture.

Ply refers to the number of yarn strands twisted together. The higher the ply, the thicker and warmer the knit usually feels.

Different Types of Cashmere Gauge & Ply

12 Gauge / 2 Ply

Fine, lightweight and refined

12-gauge / 2-ply knit refers to a fabric made with a two-strand yarn, knitted at a fine 12-gauge density. This creates a smooth, lightweight and closely knitted fabric with a refined appearance.

A 12-gauge / 2-ply cashmere knit is ideal for pieces that need a clean, elegant and fitted silhouette. It is often used for lightweight sweaters, fine cardigans, dresses, scarves and layering pieces.

The 2-ply yarn gives the fabric strength and structure while keeping the overall feel soft, breathable and comfortable against the skin.

Best for: lightweight sweaters, fitted knits, dresses, fine scarves and elegant layering pieces.
Feel: smooth, fine, lightweight and refined.
Season: spring, autumn and year-round layering.

8 Gauge / 2 Ply

Soft, versatile and medium-weight

8-gauge / 2-ply knit refers to a fabric made with two yarn strands, knitted at a medium gauge. Compared with 12-gauge knitwear, it has a slightly thicker texture and a more relaxed feel.

This type of knit offers a comfortable balance between warmth and breathability. It works well for everyday knitwear, including sweaters, cardigans, hats, scarves and mittens.

The 8-gauge structure gives the fabric a softly textured finish, while the 2-ply yarn adds durability and shape.

Best for: sweaters, cardigans, hats, scarves and everyday knitwear.
Feel: medium-weight, breathable, soft and comfortable.
Season: autumn, winter and cool spring days.

8 Gauge / 4 Ply

Warmer, stronger and more structured

8-gauge / 4-ply knit is made using four yarn strands twisted together and knitted at an 8-gauge density. It has a medium-to-heavy weight, offering more warmth and structure than 8-gauge / 2-ply knitwear.

This combination is very versatile. It is not too fine and not too bulky, making it suitable for sweaters, cardigans, scarves, hats and heavier layering pieces.

The 4-ply yarn gives the fabric added strength, warmth and body, while the 8-gauge knit keeps the texture comfortable and wearable.

Best for: warm sweaters, cardigans, scarves, hats and winter layering pieces.
Feel: structured, warm, soft and substantial.
Season: autumn and winter.

7 Gauge / 6 Ply

Cosy, warm and cold-weather ready

7-gauge / 6-ply knit is made with six yarn strands and knitted at a slightly chunkier gauge. This creates a warmer, thicker and more textured fabric.

Because of its weight and softness, 7-gauge / 6-ply cashmere is ideal for cosy cold-weather garments such as heavy sweaters, oversized cardigans, jackets and scarves.

The 7-gauge knit creates larger stitches and a relaxed texture, while the 6-ply yarn adds warmth, strength and resilience. This type of knit is especially suitable for layering during colder months.

Best for: heavy sweaters, oversized cardigans, jackets, scarves and winter layers.
Feel: cosy, warm, soft and textured.
Season: winter and colder autumn days.

4 Gauge / 10 Ply

Chunky, luxurious and extra warm

4-gauge / 10-ply knit is one of the heaviest and warmest knit structures. It is made with ten yarn strands and knitted at a chunky 4-gauge density.

This creates a thick, substantial and beautifully textured fabric with excellent warmth. The larger stitches give the knit a relaxed, tactile appearance, while the 10-ply yarn adds weight, softness and insulation.

4-gauge / 10-ply cashmere is perfect for statement winter knitwear, chunky sweaters, oversized cardigans and cold-weather layering pieces.

Best for: chunky sweaters, oversized cardigans, statement knits and very warm winter pieces.
Feel: thick, warm, luxurious and textured.
Season: winter and very cold weather.

Choosing the Right Cashmere Knit

For a light and refined look, choose a fine gauge cashmere knit. For everyday warmth, 8-gauge styles offer softness and versatility. For colder weather, heavier ply knits provide extra warmth, texture and comfort.
